Prototyping: Vinyl Cutting

The vinyl cutter is a tool that has been adapted from the sign industry. Though the vinyl cutter is capable of cutting paper and other thin materials, it is ultimately made for cutting laminated adhesive vinyl. This tool is exceptional when precise design is needed in a temporary or permanent setting. The tool utilizes a blade similar to that of an x-acto knife and cuts through the material. The excess is then removed and discarded. The remaining vinyl is then adhered to a tape which is used to transport it to the final substrate. This method of production allows stencils to be produced with great accuracy and similar to the laser cutter, the use of Adobe Illustrator makes this equipment extremely accessible.

This student is using the vinyl cutter to cut designs that she is using as a resist. She will apply underglaze to this piece and remove the vinyl before firing.
Here, original artwork was composed in Adobe Illustrator and output to the vinyl cutter which then produced a “coloring book” stencil.
